Warzone Lag and Packet Loss Fixes

A step by step checklist for UK players who feel delayed shots, rubber-banding and shots that do not register, starting with the free fixes.

Lag in Warzone usually comes from one of three places: your own home network, your internet provider's route to the game servers, or the servers themselves. The first one is the only one you fully control, and it is where most problems start. Work through the steps below in order, because the cheapest fixes come first.

First, see what is actually wrong

Lag is a loose word. Delayed shots, characters that snap back to an earlier position and opponents who seem to teleport are separate symptoms. In the interface settings, look for the telemetry options that show latency and packet loss on screen. High latency means everything arrives late. Packet loss means some data never arrives at all, which is what causes rubber-banding. Knowing which one you have tells you which fix to try.

Step 1: use a cable if you can

A wired Ethernet connection removes the biggest source of home network trouble. Wi-Fi shares airtime with every other device in the house and suffers from walls, microwaves and neighbours' networks. If your console or PC is far from the router, a powerline adapter or a longer cable is often cheaper than a new router. Look for an Ethernet cable rated Cat 6 or better.

Step 2: if you must use Wi-Fi, improve it

Step 3: stop other traffic competing with your game

A console update, a cloud backup or someone streaming in 4K can fill your connection and push your game traffic to the back of the queue. Netflix recommends about 15 Mbps for a 4K stream, so a few streams can use up a modest broadband line quickly. Pause large downloads while you play, and ask the household to hold off on big uploads. Many routers also have a quality of service setting that prioritises gaming devices, so check your router's own manual.

Step 4: restart and update

Restart your router and your console or PC. Check the router has the latest firmware, and make sure the game and your graphics or system software are up to date. It sounds basic, but a router that has been running for weeks can develop faults that a restart clears.

Step 5: check your provider and the wider picture

If every online game suffers at the same time each evening, the cause may be congestion on your provider's network. Note the times it happens and contact your provider, since a line fault can be tested from their side. If only Warzone suffers while other games are fine, check the official Call of Duty server status pages before changing anything at home.

Where a VPN fits in

A VPN is not a cure for lag, and it will not make a slow connection fast. Because it adds a stop on the route, it can make ping worse. The cases where players try one are when a provider's route to the game servers is poor, or when they want a different region's lobbies, for example to change the skill mix they meet in matchmaking (often called SBMM lobbies). Results vary by provider, location and time of day, so treat it as an experiment. Most services offer a money back period, so you can try one and cancel if it does not help. Read our best VPN for Warzone in the UK guide and the Warzone VPN setup guide for how to set one up properly.

Two popular choices for gaming are NordVPN and Surfshark (affiliate links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you). Check each provider's current plans and terms before you buy, as prices change.

Quick checklist

  1. Turn on latency and packet loss display to see the real symptom.
  2. Play on a wired connection if possible.
  3. Move to 5GHz Wi-Fi and closer to the router if wired is not an option.
  4. Pause downloads and streaming on other devices.
  5. Restart the router and update firmware and the game.
  6. Report persistent evening problems to your provider.
  7. Try a VPN only as a last, reversible experiment.

Once your connection is sorted, put it to use with this week's builds on the tier list.
